I’ll admit it – the moment I first saw the artwork for The Great Awakening, I already had a feeling about where this musical journey might lead. After the very first listen, that feeling proved to be absolutely right.

Behind Davinport is no newcomer to Progressive Rock. Many fans will already know Dave Johnson from Crypto Knight, where he established himself as a composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer with a distinctive approach to melodic and atmospheric Progressive Rock. Before that, he also released music under the name The Forgotten Man. With Davinport, Dave now follows his own musical path, and The Great Awakening may well be the album that defines his artistic identity more clearly than anything he has done before.

One thing becomes obvious almost immediately: Dave Johnson is not trying to reinvent Progressive Rock. Instead, he embraces everything that has made the genre timeless – atmosphere, memorable melodies and carefully crafted arrangements filled with subtle musical details. Influences from Genesis, Steve Hackett, ASIA and King Crimson are unmistakable, yet they never feel like imitation. Instead, they merge naturally into an album that lovingly brings the spirit of classic Progressive Rock into the present day.

1. When Giants Awake

The album opens with an epic, majestic instrumental that immediately sets the tone. Without relying on vocals, classic Progressive Rock takes centre stage. Beautifully placed guitar solos and elegant melodic phrases make for an impressive opening that instantly draws the listener into Davinport’s musical world.

2. A New Dawning

Beautiful guitar licks meet generous amounts of classic 1980s reverb alongside subtle electronic textures. At times, it almost feels like Space Rock meets sophisticated 80s Pop. One particularly pleasing aspect is how naturally the vocals blend into the overall soundscape, giving every instrument the space it deserves.

3. Future Perfect

The opening immediately evokes memories of classic Genesis. Warm keyboard melodies and delicately played acoustic guitars create a wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere, while the constantly evolving arrangement keeps the track engaging throughout.

4. Victorious

A wonderfully groovy piece with epic overtones. Once again, the vocals become part of the musical landscape rather than dominating it. Guitars and keyboards complement one another perfectly, creating a rich and immersive listening experience.

5. New Beginnings

At first, the song almost suggests a King Crimson-inspired ballad. That impression quickly disappears. Dreamlike female backing vocals – completely wordless – float across the instrumental, adding another emotional layer. It soon becomes clear that this is neither a traditional ballad nor an uptempo track. Instead, it develops into an expressive soundscape that occasionally recalls Tony Banks. Creating genuine emotion is clearly one of Davinport’s greatest strengths.

6. Time Slips Away

This extended composition once again demonstrates Davinport’s versatility. Acoustic guitar introduces the journey before elegant flute passages transport the listener back to the golden age of Progressive Rock. Genesis fans, in particular, will feel right at home. The constantly evolving arrangement reveals fresh musical ideas throughout, rewarding repeated listens.

7. Monuments

Here, the electric guitar replaces the vocals as the leading voice. Dave Johnson once again demonstrates his gift for musical variety, moving seamlessly from one Progressive Rock passage to another without ever sounding excessive. Every transition feels deliberate and thoughtfully composed.

8. I Walk Alone

This song occasionally recalls some of ASIA’s more accessible material—were it not for those unmistakably Steve Hackett-inspired acoustic guitar passages that weave through this remarkable album. It may be one of the more straightforward songs on the record, but it never loses its Progressive Rock identity.

9. Telepathic Frequencies

The opening almost ventures into jazz territory before the drums launch the song into an irresistibly groovy Progressive Rock rhythm. Even a brief burst of double bass drumming adds extra energy. The musicians clearly enjoy every second of this performance, delivering a track overflowing with confidence and virtuosity.

And honestly… who says Progressive Rock always needs vocals? Davinport certainly don’t.

10. Night Runner

Already released as the album’s lead single, Night Runner provides the perfect conclusion to The Great Awakening. Once again, Davinport combine memorable melodies, cinematic atmospheres, tasteful guitar work and vocals that naturally become part of the musical landscape. A thoroughly satisfying finale to an impressive debut.

Conclusion

The Great Awakening is a heartfelt celebration of classic Progressive Rock. Dave Johnson successfully embraces the traditions established by many of the genre’s greatest artists without ever becoming derivative.

Majestic, emotional, atmospheric, groovy and beautifully crafted, Davinport explore almost every corner of classic Progressive Rock while maintaining a distinctive identity of their own.

What impresses most is the remarkable attention to detail. Every track contains small surprises, whether through expressive guitar work, elegant keyboard textures, acoustic passages or constantly evolving arrangements that continue to reveal something new with every listen.

If classic Progressive Rock is your musical home, The Great Awakening deserves a place in your collection.

Highly recommended for every fan of classic Progressive Rock.
